When Your Favorite Room Isn’t Cool Enough

Our local weather has been “hot” for long stretches this summer and it looks like our hot and humid days won’t be over any time soon.

All these hot days also have your AC working full time, and what you’ve noticed is that your favorite room in the house is not being kept comfortably cool.

To adequately cool this room you have turned the A/C thermostat down. This just makes the rest of your home too cool and you are paying for energy to cool a less used part of your home.  So what do you do to remedy this situation?

Start with fans.
Portable fans will help circulate cool air from one part of your home to another.  This can help if the temperature differential is not too large.  Fans can be loud and can make it hard to have a conversation or watch TV.  They also take up floor space and need to be monitored if small children are around.

Ductless A/C units work well in cooling any room.

Ceiling fans are another option.
They do a good job of circulating the air in a room.  They are less intrusive, but they do not add cooler air into the room.

Install a window A/C unit.
Depending on the construction of your room you may be able to install a window A/C unit. This is an inexpensive way to cool a room, but the units take up window space and can be loud.

Install a ductless A/C unit.
Ductless A/C units, also known as mini-split units, do a great job of cooling a specific room (and heating it in the winter), without incurring the cost of cooling other parts of your home more than needed. They consist of a wall-mounted indoor unit along with an outdoor air compressor.  The upfront cost is higher, but they will save you money over time due to their higher energy efficiency. They also won’t obstruct any windows and are much quieter.
