It’s Time for Your Furnace to Kick On, But It Doesn’t

It’s finally gotten cold enough that you need your furnace to kick on.  Problem is it isn’t starting, or it is, but it is blowing cold air into your home.  But before you call an HVAC technician here are seven “checks” you can try to solve your “chilly” problem.

check box7 Checks To Do Before Calling an HVAC Technician
Although we can’t guarantee that this will fix your problem, we can tell you that these are the first steps that any qualified HVAC technician will take when you call them out to your home.  These are also the most probable causes!

  1. Check Circuit Breakers
Start by checking your circuit panel and finding the circuit breaker for the furnace.  Make sure it is in the ON position.
  2. Check Your Thermostat
Have you switched your settings from cooling to heating mode?  Is the thermostat on?
  3. Check the Condensate Pan (the pan that catches water under the furnace)
Does your condensate pan have standing water in it?  Some furnace will stop running if the water is not draining properly out of the unit.
  4. Check the Air Filter
Your furnace will not turn on if your air filter is clogged.  This is to prevent overheating.  Air filters should be replaced every 1 – 3 months.
  5. Check the Blower Motor
Look through the small plastic window on the side of the furnace for a green blinking light. If you don’t see a green blinking light, you’ll need to call a service technician.
  6. Check the Pilot Light
If gas or propane flow to this pilot light is interrupted, even for a moment, the pilot light can go out and will need to be relit.
  7. Furnace repairCheck Gas or Propane Supply
The easiest way to see if your gas supply is good is to check another gas appliance in your house, like your gas stove.  If it does not work either, it’s time to call the gas company or get the propane tank filled.

It’s Time to Call a HVAC Professional
If you are unable to identify the reason your furnace won’t start, then it’s time to call in the pros.  They’ll check a few other things and have repair parts available.  Their goal will be to quickly have your furnace working and your home comfortable.
