Is Your Furnace Making Spooky, Scary Sounds?

Spooky sounds coming from your furnace.Halloween is almost here and creepy, scary sounds can be heard coming from strange places. If one of those places is your furnace, this may be the time to consider replacing it to make sure your family stays warm and cozy this winter.

Besides getting rid of that ghastly, energy-guzzling nightmare in your basement, there can be some real pluses that go along with replacing that old gas furnace and going with a new one.

Peace of Mind
Knowing that your furnace is going to run well and do its job all winter long without breaking  down is reassuring.  No more untimely calls to arrange a service visit to fix your furnace.  Keeping your family warm and comfortable gives everyone peace of mind.

Lower Energy Bills
If your furnace was installed before 1992, it is probably obsolete. This means it does not meet today’s U.S. Department of Energy requirements to be at least 80 percent efficient.  Most older units are in the 70% – 75% or lower energy efficiency range.

Energy Guide utility tagWhen buying a new furnace understanding the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency rating, or AFUE, is important. The efficiency rating for your heating systems helps to determine how much it will cost you to heat your home.

A high rating means that a greater amount of heat is provided for the amount of energy used. If a furnace is rated at 85 percent AFUE, 15 percent of the energy used is lost, and 85 percent actually becomes heat. The highest-performing models convert 98.5 percent of its fuel into heat.

Because today’s furnaces are so much more energy efficient, the significant monthly saving on your heating bills will go a long way in offsetting the cost of a new furnace. Ask your dealer to help you figure the payback in terms of energy savings.

Electric or Gas?
You should also consider the costs of the fuel used for energy. Electric furnaces are very efficient, but the cost of electricity does not make them the best heating choice. If you want to rely on electricity as a fuel source for heating, a much better alternative is a heat pump.

Systems now contain features that provide more even heat distribution throughout your entire home.  Have cold spots? It’s probably not a ghost, just uneven heating. Zoned heating and variable speed furnace controls can help mitigate these problems.

No More Scary Noises
The high-tech sound absorbing materials in modern high efficiency systems make operating noise non-existent compared to older models.

Longer Operating Life
High efficiency systems minimize on-and-off cycling, which lowers the wear and tear on a furnace, allowing it to last longer than lower efficiency systems.

Environmental Impact
New high efficiency HVAC systems use one-third less fuel as compared to older models, which means less waste and better conservation of natural resources.
